Tips to Asking for a Raise Amid a Global Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the way many people do business. Many companies had to lay off employees to be able to stay afloat. So, it may seem like a poor time to be seeking a higher salary. You can get a raise amid a global pandemic though, you just need to be tactful. Here are a few tips that may help.

Should You Ask For a Raise?

Asking for a raise is a fairly nerve-wracking thing to do anyway, nevermind the fact that we are in the midst of a global pandemic. However, there are a few periods of time where asking for a raise, even now, would make sense. For example, if your boss recently announced good financial health for the company, this could be a good time to ask for a raise. You may also consider asking for a raise if there has been a growth period recently or you recently had a good performance review.

Know What the COVID-19 Challenges Are

Before you go asking for a raise though, be aware of what the challenges for your company are when it comes to dealing with the pandemic. If the business you are working for has been scraping by to make payroll, it probably isn’t the best time to ask for a raise. Instead, show some initiative in determining new ways for the company to make money. If these ideas pan out, it can help you get the raise you are looking for by not only providing a solution to the problem but increasing cash flow for the business as well.

Be Knowledgeable About What You Do

Know how you contribute to the business’ bottom line as a whole and how you help increase revenue. This helps you tie your position and work with the company directly to their successes. Doing so will make it clear as to why you deserve a raise and how your work directly contributes to profit. Be sure to also highlight additional accomplishments that you have achieved during your tenure there. Each of these things will showcase why you deserve the raise you are asking for.

Determine How You Can Improve

If you are underperforming in some way, find out how you can improve. In the event you cannot pinpoint anywhere to improve, you can ask your direct supervisor for feedback on your work. This can help you increase the likelihood of getting a raise. When you put forethought into your work before asking for higher pay, it shows you are self-driven.

Think About Other Perks to Negotiate

Maybe right now isn’t the best time to ask for an additional salary. There are other benefits you can negotiate with your employer. See about asking for additional vacation time, sick leave, daycare benefits, and other perks.

Get to Know the Industry

Last, but not least, know the industry as a whole. You should know what other people working your job at other companies make. It is also a good idea to stay up-to-date on any certifications and training you may need. Be sure you are maintaining your value for your current and future employers.
