How to Get Noticed By a Company Where You Don’t Have Connections

One of the best ways to get your foot in the door with an employer is by utilizing your connections. However, it isn’t the only way to get attention. There are plenty of things you can do as a potential candidate to get noticed by a company where you don’t have connections. Here are some tips.

Avoid Application Portals

Of course, most job applications are online these days, but that doesn’t mean you have to be confined to the application portal. If you simply submit your resume online, chances are you will get lost amongst all of the other applicants that have inquired about the job. Instead, try to find out how you can reach out directly to hiring managers. This can give you a leg up on other candidates applying to the position. Not to mention, reaching out to the hiring manager directly can help ensure your application doesn’t get lost at the bottom of the pile.

Know What You Have to Offer

When you approach the hiring manager, have a clear understanding of what you bring to the table that other candidates don’t and be able to communicate that. To get a clear understanding of what you have to offer, think about your previous job experience and how it has prepared you for applying to this position. Prepare stories, be able to list your accomplishments, and display the results you’ve garnered.

Being able to describe what you have to offer and clearly communicate those attributes can help you get a response faster. Sometimes, if you display the traits they are looking for, this direct communication will get you a response within 24 hours or less. Best of all, because you took the time to get to know your own personal accomplishments, you can do all of this without a referral or previous connection.

Work to Create Connections

While you may not have the connections you need right now, you can always network and create the connections you need to further your career. Don’t create these relationships by focusing on how they can help you. Instead, center your focus around creating a genuine connection with each person. Reach out to people you would actually like to get to know because they are like-minded individuals who work in your industry. It is also key to find ways that you can help them and learn from them.

Doing this can help you discover openings that may not even be available to the public yet. Because you’ve taken the time to build a relationship with someone, they will give you a heads up about new positions that you may be a good fit for. This will ultimately give you a competitive advantage when applying for a new job.

Work With a Staffing Agency

Staffing agencies are already connected to a large pool of employers and have gained their trust. Working with an agency can improve your chances of landing a job. Not to mention, recruiters will sit down with you and hash out your skills and experience. This way, you are placed in a position that really fits your career goals and needs.
