Should I Be Worried About a Robot Taking My Job?

Technology is changing every day. Artificial intelligence and robots have started taking over specific roles in the workplace. In some cases, this has made their human counterparts obsolete. Should you be worried about a robot taking your job? Here are a few things to consider.

Technology is Growing Fast

In many instances, technology is outpacing the industries it is designed for. R2D2 and Star Wars droids may come to mind, but, in all reality, tech in the workplace doesn’t look like that at all. Artificial intelligence takes the form of programs and software that learn about human interactions. Once the AI has collected the data, it then provides support to make processes more efficient.

Fears Concerning Robots

For many people, robots’ concern comes from the thoughts that they will work more efficiently, be better learners, and eventually replace them in the workplace. While these fears aren’t biased, artificial intelligence is being used to help work alongside humans, not solo. In truth, you probably don’t need to worry about a robot taking your job. Instead, they will work with you, filling in skills gaps and communicating between staff members.

You Already Work With AI

Chances are, you have already worked with AI robots. Many industries have already implemented this technology to help them optimize their processes. Most of what workers are doing on the job today has to do with communication and problem-solving. Machines will be used to enhance those skills, not replace you.

Always Time to Learn

If your industry is changing and adopting more technology, take the time to learn about it. This will make you more competitive in the job market. It will also help make sure the technology won’t replace you. Instead, you will be a resource to the company as someone who understands how it works.

Some Industries Are Safe

Even though it probably isn’t something you have to worry about too much, specific jobs are safe from robots. Most mechanic positions are safe from robot replacement. This is because it is a job that requires a certain amount of problem-solving and customer service. Teachers are also on the list of professionals safe from being replaced by AI. Writers and authors, line installers and workers, and occupational therapists don’t have much to worry about either. Each of these jobs requires some level of human understanding, empathy, and direct communication.
