A Few Things to Know When Starting a Job at a Warehouse

Starting a new warehouse job is exciting, but it’s also daunting if you’ve never held a similar position previously. Warehouses come with their own quirks. Plus, the nature of the work can make specific choices crucial if you want to remain comfortable on the job.

Fortunately, it’s possible to prepare even if you are stepping into a warehouse environment for the first time and aren’t sure what to expect.

Here are a few things you need to know when starting a job at a warehouse.

Choose the Right Attire, Footwear

The clothing you choose won’t just impact your comfort level; it affects your performance. You need to select attire that makes sense for the environment and the physical nature of the role, ensuring you can remain comfortable and capable at all times.

In most cases, your first step is to review the employee handbook for guidelines. That lets you know if items like steel-toed boots are required or if clothing options like shorts or tank tops are permitted.

Once you understand the rules, go with breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking options. Additionally, dress in layers regardless of whether the environment is hot or cold, allowing you to adjust your clothing based on how physical the day gets and how your body temperature shifts throughout the day.

Regardless of temperature considerations, you need to make sure your clothing allows you to move freely, so avoid garments that are too tight. However, you don’t want overly baggy clothing either, as loose sleeves and similar issues can be safety hazards when working near machinery. Instead, aim for a happy medium. For example, choose attire that’s semi-fitted, opting for sleeves that don’t hang over your hands or with elastic that keeps them on your arms.

In many cases, bringing an extra pair of work-eligible shoes and sock is also smart. With those, you can change your shoes midday if your feet get hot and sweaty, which can make a world of difference when it comes to comfort.

Follow Safety & Other Physical Guidelines

Many new warehouse employees want to impress when they start a new job. As a result, they might push themselves too hard physically. Along with increasing your odds of burnout, not following safe lifting rules or similar guidelines increases your odds of injury. By sticking with the set procedures, you can remain productive while remaining healthy.

Focus On Hydration

Whether your warehouse leans hot or cold, hydration matters. Physical work is inherently dehydrating even if the temperature is low, and it can speed up dehydration when it’s warm or hot. As a result, you need to make sure you have access to plenty of water.

If you can’t bring water onto the warehouse floor, take advantage of other opportunities for quick drinks. Always stop at a water fountain for a sip when you pass by one. Make sure to drink water during your breaks and lunch. If you’re feeling overheated or have signs of dehydration, let a supervisor know so that you can head off for a quick drink.
